Glossary

The words, briefly.

Came across a term in an article or in your dashboard? Here's what it means, in a sentence or two.

Email signature
The block of text, often with a logo or photo, added to the end of every email you send: who you are, what you do and how to reach you.
HTML signature
A formatted signature (colours, images, clickable links) built with HTML tables so it looks the same in Gmail, Outlook and Apple Mail.
Tracking pixel
An invisible 1×1 image in an email or signature. When the mail app loads it, that is counted as an open.
Read receipt
Confirmation that an email was opened. In Gmail only for work or school accounts when the admin allows it; otherwise done with a per-email pixel.
Apple Mail Privacy Protection
An Apple Mail feature (since iOS 15) that preloads images through Apple's servers, which can count opens that never happened.
Click-through rate (CTR)
Clicks divided by the number of times something was shown, such as a banner. Useful for comparing variants.
Signature banner
A clickable image under your signature, usually up to 600 pixels wide, used to promote one thing.
